Automobiles

Honda's global lineup consists of the Fit, Civic, Accord, Insight, CR-V and S2000. An early proponent of developing vehicles to cater to different needs and markets worldwide, Honda's lineup varies by country and may feature vehicles exclusive to that region. A few examples are the latest Acura TL luxury sedan and the Ridgeline, Honda's first light-duty pickup truck. Both were engineered primarily in North America and are exclusively produced and sold there.

The Honda Civic is a line of compact cars developed and manufactured by Honda. In North America, the Civic is the second-longest continuously-running nameplate from a Japanese manufacturer; only the Toyota Corolla, introduced in 1968, has been in production longer. The Civic, along with the Accord and Prelude, comprised Honda's vehicles sold in North America until the 1990s, when the model lineup was expanded. Having gone through several generational changes, the Civic has become larger and more upmarket, and it currently slots between the Fit and Accord.

Honda Automobiles is one of the Big Asian Four (with Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai).

The 2006 Ridgeline was a reintroduction of the concept of a Uni-Body truck. Earlier examples of this concept are the Subaru Brat and Baja, Volkswagen Rabbit pick-up, and Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp.

Honda entered Formula One as a constructor for the first time in the 1964 season at the German Grand Prix with Ronnie Bucknum at the wheel. 1965 saw the addition of Richie Ginther to the team, who scored Honda's first point at the Belgian Grand Prix, and Honda's first win at the Mexican Grand Prix. 1967 saw their next win at the Italian Grand Prix with John Surtees as their driver. In 1968, Jo Schlesser was killed in a Honda RA302 at the French Grand Prix. This racing tragedy, coupled with their commercial difficulties selling automobiles in the United States, prompted Honda to withdraw from all international motorsport that year.

After a learning year in 1965, Honda-powered Brabhams dominated the 1966 French Formula Two championship in the hands of Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme. As there was no European Championship that season, this was the top F2 championship that year. In the early 1980s Honda returned to F2, supplying engines to Ron Tauranac's Ralt team. Tauranac had designed the Brabham cars for their earlier involvement. They were again extremely successful. In a related exercise, John Judd's Engine Developments company produced a turbo "Brabham-Honda" engine for use in IndyCar racing. It won only one race, in 1988 for Bobby Rahal at Pocono.

Honda returned to Formula One in 1983, initially with another Formula Two partner, the Spirit team, before switching abruptly to Williams in 1984. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Honda powered cars won six consecutive Formula One Constructors Championships. WilliamsF1 won the crown in 1986 and 1987. Honda switched allegiance again in 1988. New partners Team McLaren won the title in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. Honda withdrew from Formula One at the end of 1992, although the related Mugen-Honda company maintained a presence up to the end of 1999, winning four races with Ligier and Jordan Grand Prix.

Honda debuted in the CART IndyCar World Series as a works supplier in 1994. The engines were far from competitive at first, but after development, the company powered six consecutive drivers championships. In 2003, Honda transferred its effort to the rival IRL IndyCar Series. In 2004, Honda-powered cars overwhelmingly dominated the IndyCar Series, winning 14 of 16 IndyCar races, including the Indianapolis 500, and claimed the IndyCar Series Manufacturers' Championship, Drivers' Championship and Rookie of the Year titles. In 2006, Honda became the sole engine supplier for the IndyCar Series, including the Indianapolis 500. In the 2006 Indianapolis 500, for the first time in Indianapolis 500 history, the race was run without a single engine problem.

During 1998, Honda considered returning to Formula One with their own team. The project was aborted after the death of its technical director, Harvey Postlethwaite. Honda instead came back as an official engine supplier to British American Racing (BAR) and Jordan Grand Prix. Honda bought a stake in the BAR team in 2004 before buying the team outright at the end of 2005, becoming a constructor for the first time since the 1960s. Honda won the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix with driver Jenson Button.

It was announced on 5 December 2008, that Honda would be exiting Formula One with immediate effect due to the 2008 global economic crisis.The team was sold to former team principal Ross Brawn and renamed Brawn GP.

To think that we had assumed Honda had gotten rid of it’s i-DSI engines, with the new City being available solely with a range of 4 cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engines, but no, we were wrong! The i-DSI engine is still alive and kicking in the new Honda Insight, as these scans from Honda’s official magazine in Belgium reveal.

The Honda Insight will be powered by an Euro 5-compliant 1.3 liter (1,339cc) i-DSI i-VTEC engine that has 8 valves (2 per cylinder), Dual & Sequential Ignition (2 spark plugs per cylinder), and variable valve timing that produces 88 horsepower at 5,800rpm and 123Nm of torque at 4,600rpm.

Not quite the 1.5 liter i-DSI that we are so familiar with, the one that produces its peak torque at a nice 2,700rpm, but looks decent. The somewhat anaemic power figures are helped by the IMA electric motor which adds another 13.6hp and 103Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a CVT transmission, which has optional steering wheel paddle shifts.

Two different trim levels are available – the Insight Comfort and the Insight Elegance. The Comfort has the necessities such as automatic climate control, airbags and etc. The Elegance version adds some extra equipment such as fog lamps, cruise control, heated front seats, automatic headlamps and wipers and the previously mentioned paddle shifts.

Honda rates the new Honda Insight at a consumption of 4.4 liters per 100km on the combined cycle, and 101g/km of CO2 emissions. More details will be revealed at the official unveiling, but for now check out the brochure scans after the jump.

This is for those who appreciate the technology that goes into a powertrain. How does the new 1.8 liter SOHC i-VTEC engine in the new 2006 Honda Civic and all 1.8 Car intro after 2006, achieve good fuel mileage (Honda claims 1.5 liter fuel economy during cruising) while producing a respectable 140 horsepower and 174 Nm of torque?

According to Honda, during low load driving conditions like highway cruising where the driver would be pressing the accelerator pedal only slightly, the engine experiences pumping losses due to the restricted air flow created by a throttle butterfly that is almost closed. Pumping losses and air resistance result in a negative impact to fuel economy Using a conventional mechanical throttle this cannot be avoided. Low speed = small throttle butterfly opening. Pedal to the metal = big throttle butterfly opening.

Honda got around this using Drive-by-wire and a fuel-economy optimized i-VTEC system. The i-VTEC system for the 1.8 liter SOHC engine has 2 sets of cam lobes, one for high output and one for low load conditions. During low load conditions, the pumping losses are avoided by letting the throttle butterfly open wider than it normally would. To offset the larger amount of air coming in, the intake valve timing is delayed. This reduces pumping losses up to 16 percent.

Second generation Honda Stream

Honda announced the release of an all-new Stream. Featuring a low-floor platform, the new Stream combines stylish compact exterior with a comfortable interior and powerful driving performance. With a low overall height of 1,545mm*, the new Stream has a modern dynamic look and fits conveniently into most restricted-height mechanical parking lots. The new Stream will go on sale from Friday, July 14 at Honda automobile dealers throughout Japan.

The new, second-generation Stream is a 7-passenger car with the versatility and functionality to make getting around a true pleasure. Along with its vibrant, low-slung styling, it delivers total comfort and a feeling of integration wherever the driver and passengers come in contact with the vehicle - whether getting in and out, steering, throttle response, or changing the seat arrangements.

Body frame rigidity has been enhanced for improved driving performance, and the front sub-pillars have been eliminated to attain a significant increase in visibility. The floor design has also been significantly improved to create a flat foot area from corner to corner and a significantly lower floor for the third row of seats. These innovations mean improved passenger comfort as well as a lower center of gravity for superior handling. Both powerplants - the newly developed 2.0l i-VTEC engine with CVT and the 1.8l i-VTEC engine with 5-speed automatic transmission - deliver powerful, smooth driving performance from low-to-mid speeds.

The sporty RSZ, available in both 2.0-liter and 1.8-liter versions, comes equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels and a custom-tuned suspension for extra driving enjoyment. The RSZ's custom aerodynamic parts, black interior, and other attractive design features combine to enhance the car's sporty driving image.

All models have earned Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport certification as Low-Emissions Vehicles, with emission levels 75% lower than those required by 2005 standards, while the front-wheel-drive models exceed Japanese government fuel economy standards for 2010 by 10%.

The new Stream is also available with the most advanced Honda safety technologies, including IHCC** (Intelligent Highway Cruise Control), which controls vehicle speed and distance to the car ahead to reduce the burden on the driver, and CMBS2 (Collision Mitigation Brake System) + E-pretensioners2, which uses millimeter wave radar technology to detect the possibility of a collision and then help avoid or reduce the force of the collision.

Key Features of the New Stream

Styling

The new Stream’s dynamic styling features an agile, low-slung form that expresses functional beauty reminiscent of a coupe.

The low overall ride height imparts a vibrant aesthetic, while the sporty, dynamic exterior design belies the utility of the extra third row of seating.
The RSZ boasts an even more sporty image thanks to its custom aerodynamic parts.
Packaging
The comfortable interior breathes relaxation and quality from every nook and cranny.
The wheelbase has been increased by 20mm1 and the pedal layout adjusted to increase the tandem distance between the second and third row seats by 30mm1, giving more room to third-row passengers .
The side sill has been redesigned to obtain an extra 20mm1 of width for passengers in the first and second rows. For the third row, the use of a slim fuel tank permits a lower floor, while the reduced cross section in the rear frame results in more width. The adoption of a separate rear frame and floor panel construction allows for a floor flat all the way out to its edges on both sides.
The floor tunnel has been eliminated for a significant gain in leg room. Exhaustive efforts to remove even minor bumps and gradations in the floor overall result in a completely flat floor that creates a relaxing space, no matter where the passenger is sitting.

Interior

The new Stream’s interior combines a sporty driving environment with a refined, modern quality.

The instrument panel features two oversized meters positioned for easy viewing, along with a center panel angled toward the driver for enhanced ease of use. The internal configuration of the instrument panel has been made more compact to secure more room for the driver’s legs, while the portion of the dashboard on the passenger’s side employs soft materials to give the passenger a heightened feeling of security.
The instruments and center-console cup holders are finished with ring-shaped metal rims to impart a modern feel. Blue lighting at night creates a change from daytime ambience.
A telescopic tilt steering wheel and seat height adjuster allow the driver to find just the right driving position.

Utility

The new Stream’s simple, easy utility features are designed for maximum ease of use.

The seat mechanisms are designed for easy operation. The second-row seat is equipped with an easy-to-use walk-in slide mechanism that allows third-row passengers to enter the vehicle comfortably, while both the second- and third-row seatbacks can be folded down for increased luggage space.
A variety of storage compartments are located around the cockpit and for each of the three rows of seating. Shape, volume, and positioning of the compartments have been designed for maximum ease of use.
The luggage area features two separate, lidded compartments left and right, for greater versatility to suit a variety of uses.

Powertrain

The intelligent powertrains deliver strong acceleration and near-perfect linear response.

Newly developed 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine and 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine.
The i-VTEC system further improves on Honda’s original VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) technology to allow the engine to retard intake valve closure timing under low engine-load driving conditions. Valve control is complemented by a DBW (Drive By Wire) system that provides optimum throttle valve control, significantly reducing pumping losses. This results in greater energy efficiency, for a major improvement in fuel economy while cruising. At the same time, improved intake efficiency and a higher compression ratio create ample low-range torque, while comprehensive friction reduction measures and precise air-fuel ratio control result in outstanding fuel economy.
Both engines achieve excellent fuel economy of 14.8km/l2, exceeding Japanese government fuel economy standards for 2010 by 10%3, along with outstanding exhaust emission performance certified by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as being 75% lower than that required by 2005 standards.
The increased energy efficiency of the i-VTEC variable valve timing control system is further enhanced by a 3-stage variable-length intake manifold on the newly developed 2.0-liter engine to deliver torquey performance at all engine speeds, while the 1.8-liter engine employs a variable-length intake manifold that optimizes intake ram effect.
2.0-liter models are equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with torque converter4. The torque converter delivers powerful, snappy off-the-line performance to go with the CVT’s smooth, seamless acceleration.
1.8-liter models come with a 5-speed automatic transmission that takes advantage of the engine’s performance characteristics to achieve both powerful acceleration and outstanding fuel economy. The upgrade to a 5-speed transmission from the previous Stream’s 4-speed transmission permits both a wider overall range of gearing and closer gear ratios.
The RSZ comes equipped with a paddle shifter with intelligent control. Operating the paddle shifter when the transmission is in Drive automatically flips the transmission into manual mode. The transmission then detects driving conditions, paddle-shifter and throttle operation to automatically return to auto mode, so anyone can enjoy carefree, sporty shifting. What’s more, the RSZ (2.0l FWD) with CVT also comes with a 7-speed manual-shift mode to make the most of the CVT’s remarkable shifting freedom. Intelligent shift control captures the driver’s sensibility more faithfully than ever.

Production of the S2000 ceased in 2009. Plans for an S2000 successor were scrapped in the aftermath of the automotive industry crisis of 2008.To commemorate the production run of the S2000, Honda offered a special variant called the S2000 Ultimate Edition for the European market, and a similar GT Edition 100 variant in the UK. These editions feature a removable hard top, Grand Prix White paint scheme, red leather interior, and numbered plaques.

Engineering and design

When designing the Integra, Honda chose to base it on an entirely new platform, rather than incrementally re-engineering the previous Integra/Civic platform. This new chassis would also be shared with the 2001 Civic. This was a significant change from the previous 1998 revision of the Integra, which had only been a minor refresh. In addition, this platform was the first entirely new entry-level chassis Honda had debuted since 1994. Owing to its more capable and luxurious nature, the Acura division chose to market the vehicle as the Integra's replacement, and badged it as the RSX. Touting the vehicle's more upscale feature-set and more luxurious amenities, Acura hoped to use the RSX to help garner more brand recognition and respect from older, wealthier buyers who tended to see the company's offerings, especially the Integra, as sporty and reliable, but not as mature or luxurious. Outside of North America, where the Acura division did not exist at the time, Honda chose to continue selling the model as the Integra, and continued to aim the car at younger men who wanted something more upscale than a Civic Si without having to spend considerably more money.

The Integra suspension employs MacPherson struts in the front and double-wishbone suspension in the rear. This engineering decision disappointed some Honda enthusiasts who had come to appreciate Honda's philosophy of employing double-wishbones for both front and rear suspensions. However, the K-series engine proved to have significant potential for tuning, a trait shared with the B-series engines previously employed in Integra and certain performance-oriented Civic models. The K-series engine features intelligent VTEC or (i-VTEC), which electronically adjusts valve lift, valve duration and valve timing, giving the 2.0 L engine a flatter torque curve relative to previous VTEC implementations which only adjusted valve lift and valve duration.

The base RSX has the K20A3 motor with an output of 160 hp (119 kW) and is offered with either an automatic or a five-speed manual transmission; the Type-S has a 200 hp (2002-2004) K20A2 or 210 hp (157 kW) in 2005 K20Z1 motor and a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission. For the 2006 model year vehicles Honda switched to the Rev 8/04 SAE standards for measuring hp. The base RSX for 2006 was rated at 155 hp (116 kW) and the Type-S was rated at 201 hp (150 kW). In 2005 the RSX Type-S received camshafts, b-pipe and muffler, 4.7 final drive ratio, crankshaft pulley and the intake snorkel duct from the Japanese model Honda Integra Type-R. Another major change made to the inline VTEC-i engine was the use of a timing chain rather than a timing belt, which reduced maintenance needs.

The Honda Integra Type-R, sold in Japan has reduced weight, a 220 PS / 164 kW / 217 hp (162 kW) K20A I4 engine (Japan-only; Oceania models have an engine similar to the Acura RSX-S), as well as a limited slip differential (LSD) and stiffer springs and shocks, 4 piston Brembo brakes, 17" wheels on Bridgestone Potenza tires, Recaro suede seats, body trim, and more.

Honda Japan has begun selling the all-new fourth-generation Step WGN and the Step WGN special-needs vehicle. Their siblings the Step WGN Spada and Step WGN Spada special-needs vehicle will debut on October 23. Although most probable, Honda makes no mention of the Step WGN appearing at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Step WGN is a multi-purpose vehicle with a flat low-floor and low centre of gravity. It will swallow up to eight passengers but still offer plenty of utility options. Length and height have been increased by 50mm and 45mm respectively for more room. Under-floor storage for third-row seats has been included alongside a whole array of other storage options. Some of the seats can be folded and flipped up to suit whatever occasion.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine said to make the Step WGN a class leader in fuel consumption figures. An average of 14.2 litres per 100km is returned under Japanese test specifications. Its mate can either be a CVT or a 5-speed automatic depending on the customer's needs. Both FWD and AWD are offered for the several models and packages.

Honda has designed it to be attractive with a sculpted front grille, large headlights and a roof that appears to slope rearward. The interior features things like 3D self-illuminated gauges for convenience.

The fourth generation Honda Stepwgn is a full redesign of the model, and was launched on October 9 2009. The model grew in size, increasing in height and length, but remained the same width. The Stepwgn Spada model returned, keeping its unique grille and headlamp design, giving it an imposing, more upmarket and sporty look. The Stepwgn is available in seven trim levels: G, G L Package, L, Li, Spada S, Spada Z and Spada Zi. Honda L engine
Two different valvetrains are present on this engine series. The L13, i-DSI, or “intelligent Dual & Sequential Ignition”. This setup utilizes 2 spark plugs per cylinder. They fire at different intervals during the combustion process to achieve a more complete burn of the gasoline. This process allows the engine to have more power while keeping fuel consumption low thanks to the better utilization of gasoline. Emissions are also reduced. The i-DSI engines have a modest redline of only 6000 rpm, but reach maximum torque at mid-range rpm, allowing for decent performance without having to rev the engine at high speeds.and with the new Design Vtec + DSI for the L13 it produce 100Hp then the old L13 DSI that only had 86Hp

The other valvetrain in use is the VTEC on one of the two varieties of the L15A. This engine is aimed more at performance than efficiency with a slightly higher redline, which reaches peak torque at higher rpm. However, it still offers a good combination of both performance and fuel efficiency.which had had 120Hp.that a lot for a 1.5 L engine

Based on the Global Small Platform which underpins cars such as the Honda Fit as well as the Freed’s more boxy cousin the Honda Mobilio/Mobilio Spike, the Honda Freed is powered by the new L-Series 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine (118 PS at 6,600rpm, 144Nm at 4,800rpm) mated to a CVT gearbox with a torque converter as its start-up device. It has 3 different seating configurations: a 5-seater, a 7-seater (2,2,3 with second row captain’s seats) and an 8-seater (2,3,3).

The Fit platform’s innovative flat floor allows maximum interior space to be used (Honda claims to be able to carry a 27 inch bicycle without taking off wheels or handle bars), and Honda says the 7-seater seating layout allows any passenger in any row to exit via any door thanks to a “walk through layout”. Looking at an image of the 7-seater interior seating configuration found after the jump, they are probably right as there is a clear empty space between the front two seats as well. The 8-seater version uses a 60:40 split fold bench for the second row.

The dashboard gets Honda’s latest two-tiered design, with both speedo, RPM and multi-info display located at the top deck nearest to the windscreen for easier visibility. The lower deck hosts the air conditioning controls and the gear shifter. Smack in the middle of the two decks in a rather high position is the 2-DIN player - a high position like this could allow the rear passengers to view it easily in case an in-dash LCD screen with DVD player is installed.

The front suspension design is of the MacPherson strut layout while the rear is a H-shaped torsion beam to minimise interior intrusion of suspension

components. The Honda Freed uses an Electric Power Steering system, and safety features include ISOFIX points for child seats, optional Vehicle Stability Assist, and a maximum configurable option of 8 airbags including front, side, curtain and third row side airbags. Certain models have HID headlamps, but all lenses are reflector lenses.

According to a report by Japan’s Nikkei business daily, Honda will introduce a hybrid version of its Freed minivan in 2011. Honda’s new president Takanobu Ito also told Nikkei that Honda will introduce a battery electric vehicle by 2015.

Two different valvetrains are present on this engine series. The L13, i-DSI, or “intelligent Dual & Sequential Ignition”. This setup utilizes 2 spark plugs per cylinder. They fire at different intervals during the combustion process to achieve a more complete burn of the gasoline. This process allows the engine to have more power while keeping fuel consumption low thanks to the better utilization of gasoline. Emissions are also reduced. The i-DSI engines have a modest redline of only 6000 rpm, but reach maximum torque at mid-range rpm, allowing for decent performance without having to rev the engine at high speeds.and with the new Design Vtec + DSI for the L13 it produce 100Hp then the old L13 DSI that only had 86Hp

The other valvetrain in use is the VTEC on one of the two varieties of the L15A. This engine is aimed more at performance than efficiency with a slightly higher redline, which reaches peak torque at higher rpm. However, it still offers a good combination of both performance and fuel efficiency.which had had 120Hp.that a lot for a 1.5 L engine

Japanese car manufacturer Honda
has announced that its all-new second-generation Honda Fit will go on sale in Japan on Friday, October 26, 2007. The Fit is a five-door hatchback launched in June 2001, that quickly became the first car since 1969 to outsell Toyota's best-seller, the Corolla, on the Japanese car market. So clearly we're onto something good!

With Honda's man maximum, machine minimum philisophy at the heart of the concept, Honda likes to think of the Fit as the "ideal small car for a new age," where passenger space has been maximized and the "space occupied by mechanical components has been minimized." So what's changed since the previous generation? For starters, the new Fit is 20 mm wider and has a longer wheelbase (+50 mm) than its predecessor and the front pillar has been moved forward to create a more spacious interior. Honda claims that the body construction of the second-generation Fit is more rigid and that more sound-absorbing acoustic materials have been fitted. The entry-level model features a 100 hp 1.3-litre i-VTEC engine.

Since we're all about power, aerodynamics, gadgets and sex appeal, we're more interested in the Fit RS (signifying Road Sailing) model that will be powered by a new 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine, putting out 88 kW (120 hp). It won't blow your trousers away, but don't despair, you'll be riding around 19.6 km on a liter of petrol (45 mpg U.S.). Honda engineers have clearly devoted attention to practicality this time again, as the Fit comes with a rotating passenger seat, a feature that should be welcomed by those struggling with backache!
